Synopsis

Five weeks after Natalie walked out of my life, I was forced to go back to the start. Twice I’d given my heart to those who didn’t want it, leaving me alone again wondering who I was, where I was meant to be going, and what I stood for.

Loneliness became my new best friend, no matter how hard I tried to deny it. Bitterness threatened to take over and turn me into somebody I wasn’t. Nothing made me feel alive anymore. Nothing made me happy.

Until she arrived. Her. The girl no one was meant to fall in love with—especially not me. Especially not then.

We didn’t know that our time together was fleeting. Our futures were already shaped for us, weaved together by a string of events that were destined to tear us apart if we let them. I just wasn’t willing to go down without a fight this time.

Not all men give up so easily, and the scars on my heart had made me stronger. If anyone could beat the cruel hand of fate, it was me. All I had to do was believe.

In me. In her. In us.

That beautiful, unexpected, thrilling, surprise love of mine.

~ Marcus Anderson

My Review

With a flawless soundtrack and the most intense emotions, this book tells the story of a very special man. A story that starts right after Natexus, surf through the past to fight Marcus demons and discover beside him if it's possible to love and be loved again.

One of the things I loved the most about this novel was how Marcus grew as a character. He was that man trying to do the right thing even if he was suffering in the process. He was so caring and selfless, also he had this hability to laugh at himself that is so rare and precious.

"The best thing you can be is a man who laughs in the face of his struggles."

In the previous book we met Marcus as Samy's brother and the love interest of Natalie after Alex Law. He was that friend (and lover) who helped her to reconstruct her life and to smile again. He was the closest thing to a superhero (for me), and after his break-up with Natalie I was wishing for him to have a 'Happily Ever After'.

But as you must know, Victoria L. James isn't the kind of writer who let the characters get what they want so easily. And this wasn't an exception.

Marcus was hurt after the break-up with Natalie. He was feeling something wasn't right in his life. No matter how much liquor he drank, the loneliness was always there. He felt empty and started to question all the decisions he had made, the things he loved and left behind, and the things he does and don't fullfill him.

Long story short, he was a mess.

But then the past knock at his door, and the shit hit the fan. This confused man had to deal with the ghosts who were haunting him while he was trying to define a way to go on. And for a while he found himself back in the days when he was a happy man, when he had a purpose and a muse. But as I said before, it was a ghost messing with him... and when the reality show its face, Marcus was in a worst place, more sad and confused.

But he was also free...

Our superhero (also known as Marcus), for once, was the one needing to be saved. And he was about to find that person capable to embrace him so tight that could put his cracks back together.
She's a strong woman. Beautiful, funny and smart. She offers him her friendship, her honest and her heart, and together they will live the most powerful connection. They will be light and darkness. Day and Night. Ice and Fire... They will be unique. But their road to happiness don't will be easy. There are tears and frustration, sadness and lost, but at the end all the pain will be worth it 'cause together they will built a life filled with love, peace and friendship.

I'm so grateful for the chance to read this book. Grateful for witness one of the most beautiful and special love stories ever written, because it wasn't only about the romance between a couple, it wasn't just about their physical attaction... it was about learning to love yourself first, to put yourself first for once. About finding that things that make you happy and share them with the people you care about. This book was about friendship and how this appear in the most unexpected ways and places. It's about pain, yes, but it's also about the joy to free yourself of the pain and decide to be happy. I cried a lot reading it, sure, but I also laughed a lot.

I enjoyed Victoria L. James writing. She's a talented author and I really really hope you could give this series a try. Starting with Natexus. You will not regret it.

Meet the Author

Victoria L James is a teenage girl stuck in a thirty-something year-olds body. Living somewhere 'oop north' in England, she has had a strong passion for words and stories going as far back as she can remember, which she credits to her grandmother and her love of reading anything that was on sale and cheap from the local market stall. Never once did she think she would release a novel, though. At best, she thought her love of language and her ability to create stories in her mind would provide her with a 'get out of jail free' card whenever she messed up and her parents were mad at her during her teenage years... and when even that didn't work out, she thought she was pretty much done for.

When an opportunity presented itself for her to take a back seat from paid working life for a few years, she knew straight away that she had to try and write about a few of these worlds she'd come up with along the way, and quieten all the voices in her head without racking up a heavy psychiatry bill for the pleasure.

Wearing her heart on her sleeve and trying to lighten her friends’ and family’s lives with naff, and more often than not, badly timed, nineties jokes, she has yet to learn the art of knowing when to shut up. Which is another reason writing became a passion of hers. With pen and paper, there are no limits.

A firm believer in never quitting, with a ridiculous obsession for all things Rocky, she hopes that one day she writes a story that will inspire at least one person out there to keep on going if they're struggling. Other than that, she's just a regular old converse wearing, corona sipping, English version of Chandler Bing, who loves and adores her family more than life itself. Oh, and she also has two cats. Every writer has to mention their cats, right?
